This has been a 3-year journey starting May of 2013. I was pre-diabetic with painful neuropathy, including severe plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and headaches. I was increasingly lethargic and could barely walk. My neurologist said I had a choice – change my eating habits and get rid of the weight or be pushed around in a wheel chair the rest of my life!
When discussing diet plans, he steered me towards a low carb diet. In exactly one year, May of 2014, I lost 110 lbs. I was healed of all my symptoms. I was walking, jogging, and enjoying things like sled riding with my grand-kids. We even bought motorcycles. My husband also lost 90 lbs.
Unfortunately, my sugar/food addiction started kicking in and the struggle started. I sorrowfully gained 50 lbs. I tried my hardest to be successful but it was up and down with binges I couldn’t control. Facing diabetes and the horrible pain I had prior to weight loss, I knew I couldn’t give up. I read books about eating low-carb, high fat [LCHF], watched YouTube videos, and read blogs on addiction. I came across an encouraging low-carb lecture by Jacqueline Eberstein, formerly head nurse for Dr. Atkins for 30+ years.
I was also introduced to Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, Martinsburg, West Virginia, who educates people about their diabetes and how to reverse it. I spoke with him and he sent me to Melanie Miller who is now part of the HEAL Diabetes Clinics’ team. She encouraged me. She said I had greatness in me and that I could do it. She told me she would help. I knew this was someone who wouldn’t turn her back on me. It gets better. She introduced me to Dr. Eric Westman, a HEAL co-founder and its Chief Medical Officer, and also a member of the Duke University Lifestyle Clinic. He gave me incredible advice and momentum using the LCHF diet. I am happy to report that I have taken my life back and have lost 110 lbs. again.
I have a burning desire to pay it forward. I want to help any person that is losing hope and seeks help. I can support and help them succeed. I plan to walk in Melanie Miller’s footsteps – we need to save as many lives as we can. The low-carb way of eating wipes out obesity and reverses all sorts of diseases, including Type 2 diabetes. I’ve seen it free people from their medications and give them a life they could only dream. This could be YOU! This is YOUR time! You may have failed before but those days are over. You can be on your way to healing your yourself! You have nothing to lose. Well, maybe a lot to lose, but a lot to gain as well.
